RIP Dame Jane Goodall

Recently in Year 5...

 

Year 5 have been studying David Attenborough and Jane Goodall in our English and guided reading lessons. We have loved learning about their passion for the natural world and their determination to conserve the environment.

 We were so sad to hear of the death of Jane Goodall last week at the age of 91, but have been grateful that we have had the opportunity to learn more about this passionate planet protector and her fascinating studies of chimpanzees

This week, year 5 will be writing an independent biography about Jane Goodall and will be able to showcase her many achievements.

Here are some interesting facts that we have discovered about her fascinating life!

  • As a small child she was given a cuddly chimpanzee whom she named Jubilee.  This inspired her love for the animals and she still has it to this day
  • She has studied chimpanzees for over 60 years and discovered that they make tools and show complex emotions
  • Her first name is actually Valerie- Jane is her middle name
  • She lost the tip of her thumb when a chimpanzee that she was studying bit her
