Bradwell Abbey Trip

Year 4 visited Bradwell Abbey to find out more about the Romans – our topic for this term.
What a great day we had! It started with a beautiful walk through the MK park land between school and the abbey. On arrival, we went into the Cruck Barn to see a physical timeline demonstrated to us to show how long ago the Romans were here in Britain. It was a long, long time ago – about 2000 years ago!
The rest of the day consisted of three activities for the children. HB8’s favourite activity was the Roman Banquet. They had to take on a role of either a Roman (the master, his wife or their guests) or one of their servants/cooks/entertainers. The Romans were then fed and entertained and if the master did not approve of anything, he was within his rights to then punish the necessary culprits!
Another session was devoted to archaeology where the children were able to have a hands-on experience of handling real Roman artefacts. However, some ‘Archaeofiction’ items were added in and they had to spot which items were not true artefacts and why. This led to much observation and discussion.
The third session was finding out about Roman soldiers. They were able to handle Roman helmets, belts and sandals. They also found out about the life style and work of a Roman soldier.
All in all, it was a fantastic day as the children were so well behaved, making us very proud of them and they also came away having learnt so much - being very keen to learn more.
