When Two Tribes Go To War!

Year 4 Roman Battle

Finally, it was the day we had been waiting for. The children had spent weeks creating their swords and shields, ready for the fiercest battle of them all – Romans VS Celts. Who would win? Only time will tell, well, sort-of, because history has told us that the Romans won the final battle against Boudicca and her Celtic army.

This did not stop our brave warriors, though. The Celts (HB5 and 7) took to the top playground, to prepare for the fight ahead. Led by Boudicca (Mrs Newman), they stood in their battle lines, ready and waiting for the Rotten Romans to make their appearance. Boudicca whipped them into a frenzy, giving a glorious final speech to egg them on and inspire them towards victory. With bated breath, they waited.

From the bottom playground, a pounding of feet could be heard. An army of Roman soldiers (HB6 and 8) were marching steadily to meet the Celts in combat led by their general (Miss Garner). They formed in ranks facing the Celts, staring them down. Their general launched into a battle speech, calling them to action and inciting their hatred towards the Cowardly Celts. With "VICTORY!" as their battle-cry, both sides leapt into attack.

*Disclaimer, no children were harmed in the making of this battle.

Swords swung, shields blocked and voices snarled. It was a bitter battle, fought long and hard by all. It was evident that the children really enjoyed this part and had immense fun acting out this grand battle. Before long, the battle was over, dead Celts and a couple of Romans littered the playground. What was left of the Celtic army ran away to hide and the Romans celebrated their rightful victory. Peace had returned, and the children were ready to head back in doors.

For the rest of the day, year 4 could be heard discussing the battle and a chorus of "Best Day Ever!" could be heard throughout the corridors of Loughton School. At home-time, all the children took their swords and shields home, excited to recount the day's events to their grown-ups and any unsuspecting listeners.
