Scratch - A Year 4 Computer unit

This half-term, Year 4 are completing a computing unit called Scratch.
Scratch is a block-based visual programming language and is aimed primarily at children as an educational tool, with a target audience of ages 5 to 16. Users can create projects using a block-like interface.
The children have to use specific commands to create accurate programs to produce sequences of actions for animate multiple characters (sprites) to carry out.
Their first task has been to make a car travel along a street. Their second task has been to make a cat bounce a basket ball and then score a goal. After, they have to make the sun set over a park, while an animal hops across the park; next followed by a night scene where the moon rises. Lastly, they have to create their own background and sprites and, using all the knowledge they have learnt from the previous tasks, make sprites move, talk and interact.
The children are having a fantastic time working on Scratch. Here are some comments from HB8.
Kyrill says it is fun way to learn programming.
Alia says it is easy way to learn programming.
David says it helps with your creativity.
Matilda says it helps you to learn computer programming skills for the future.
Overall, it has been a successful unit of work that the children have thoroughly enjoyed and where they have learnt lots.
