These are only two of the questions the children have been asking themselves over this week as we have been exploring more about this ancient civilisation. The fascinating number system really stretched our brains as we worked out base 20 and deciphered the dots and dashes which looked more like morse code than the numbers we are used to!

HB15 were the first class to unpack the new box of interesting looking items which have been purchased to help the children really get hands on. The cacao pod and beans were already known to us from last week's hot chocolate making, but the large circular clay item definitely got them thinking. It is in fact a calendar which will become more significant later in our topic and in the children's art lessons. The wooden item, which many of the children thought might be a musical instrument or baby's rattle, was in fact a chocolate whisk.
