From bean to cup: Discovering Mayan Chocolate

This week the children kicked off their new theme unit on the Maya by making traditional Mayan-style hot chocolate from roasted cacao beans.

In this immersive lesson, the children discovered where chocolate comes from and explored the vital role cacao played in Mayan civilisation. Each child took part in the hands-on process: peeling roasted cacao beans and grinding them into nibs using a pestle and mortar. The nibs were then soaked in hot water to create a richer, authentic hot chocolate. After filtering the mixture through a sieve, the warm drink was served in cups for everyone to try.

For many of the children, the taste was quite a surprise — unlike the sweet chocolate they’re used to, this traditional version made from pure cacao had a rich, slightly bitter flavour. It was a new experience, and one that helped them connect more deeply with how the Maya might have enjoyed this special drink.
