Methods of Mass Discovery

This week, Year 3 enjoyed learning some practical mass maths.

This week the children in year three have been learning about a new area of maths. We have been introducing them to mass. Each class had the opportunity to experiment with various types of scales. They were understanding the different units of measurement and using them to estimate and weigh different items found in and around the classroom. In their groups, they then estimated the mass of different and larger items outside the classroom, thinking about which would be the most accurate unit to use, i.e. you would measure the mass of a person in kilograms rather than grams and it would be more accurate to measure the mass of a feather in grams.

They enjoyed finding out about the world around them and trying to quantify it. Watch this space for a slightly damper week next week when we are learning about and experimenting with capacity!
