  • STEM week

    Year 4 children returned to school for STEM Week, giving them an exciting opportunity to work in trios on a series of problem‑solving challenges. Their design brief was to create a catapult inspired by a Roman model, complete with wheels, a holder and a functioning firing mechanism. To prepare for this, the children began the week by learning about angles and practising how to use a protractor accurately. In science, they explored the concepts of potential and kinetic energy, working collaboratively to investigate how different elastic bands—varying in thickness, length, and tension—would affect the power of their catapult. They also experimented with firing elastic bands at different angles to determine which would produce the greatest projectile distance.

    In their English sessions, the children have been learning how to write a clear and effective set of instructions for making a biodegradable plant pot out of newspaper. They have explored the key features of instructional writing, understanding that the heading must clearly explain the purpose of the instructions while also engaging the reader to encourage them to continue reading. The children know that the steps need to be written in chronological order and have learnt how to use time adverbs and imperative verbs effectively. They also understand that each step must be clear and detailed to ensure the reader can follow the instructions easily and achieve success.
