Time travel: Back to the Iron Age

What a whirlwind couple of weeks!
For the last couple of weeks, year 4 have delved into the past to learn about the Celts. The children created a human timeline to establish that the Celts lived in Britain during the Iron Age (which lay between the Bronze Age and Roman Britain). They also became history detectives, carefully considering what various sources revealed about Celtic life. Along the way, they have grown more confident in using atlases to explore the range of countries in Europe where the Celts once lived and have developed their note-taking skills. Now, they are ready and eager to showcase their learning through their independent writing next week.
- Celtic warriors often painted themselves with blue woad and shouted fierce war cries to terrify their enemies.
- Some warriors were so fearless that they went into battle with no armour, weapons, or even clothes!
- To keep themselves safe, the Celts built strong forts on the tops of hills.
- Most Celts lived as farmers, growing crops and tending animals.
- Their clothes were woven from wool and dyed with natural colours made from berries and plants.
These are just a handful of fascinating Celtic facts; however, your child will know so much more! When you have a free minute, ask them what else they can remember and share with you.
