Read All About It!

Get lost in a good book.

With the first few weeks over and a flurry of activity, we started to think about more leisurely activities. Our reading journals arrived last week and have already caused quite a stir. These new journals are ideal places for the children to note down any and all reading they have done. From chapter books to fact books, from magazines to comics. We want the children to take ownership and pride in the reading they accomplish, and not just them reading. We also encourage their grown-ups, siblings and friends to also sit and read with them.

Sharing a book is more than just reading words on a page, as it allows you the chance to discuss the wider world and your own thoughts and opinions. These conversations are vital for building their reading comprehension so they can start seeing beyond the text. We know reading is difficult for some, which is why we don't place a cap on reading. Graphic novels, comic-style books and magazines are a few different routes into reading without the ominous feel of a 900-page book. In fact, many classics, such as The Lord of the Rings, have been made into graphic novels, allowing a whole new generation of readers to enjoy the epic tale.

With classroom bookshelves groaning under the weight of books and our library ready for action, we hope the children take full advantage of our collections and fall into a good book. If they can't think of what to read, then all they need to do is talk to their teacher, who will be able to point them in the direction of some fantastic reads. Likewise, if they have read an amazing book recently, we would love to hear all about it.
