Patterned lanterns

In their English sessions, the children have been learning how to write a clear and effective set of instructions for making a biodegradable plant pot out of newspaper. They have explored the key features of instructional writing, understanding that the heading must clearly explain the purpose of the instructions while also engaging the reader to encourage them to continue reading. The children know that the steps need to be written in chronological order and have learnt how to use time adverbs and imperative verbs effectively. They also understand that each step must be clear and detailed to ensure the reader can follow the instructions easily and achieve success.
We all had great fun on Friday making our own patterned lanterns, during which the children also made notes on the process, generating succinct vocabulary and helpful top tips to overcome any challenges. Next week, they will combine their understanding of instructional writing with their creativity, to plan and write a set of instructions so others can create their own lanterns to decorate their homes. We are confident they will be highly successful and look forward to reading their finished work.
