Year 6 DT: Pneumatic Tanks!

Read on to find out how Year 6 built on last week's SMC Pneumatics workshop.

If you saw our blog post last week, you would have seen that Year 6 have been learning all about pneumatics—using air pressure to create movement. After exploring how syringes and tubing can push, pull and power different mechanisms, pupils set out to design their own pneumatic tanks.

Firstly, the children sketched their ideas, planning features such as lifting turrets, extending rams or simple firing systems using safe materials like paper balls, macaroni and corks. Then came the building stage, where they put together a wooden frame and then used syringes, tubing, cardboard and plenty of teamwork to bring their designs to life.

The best part was testing the final models. Pupils demonstrated how their pneumatic systems worked, explained the science behind them, and reflected on what they would improve next time.

It’s been a brilliant project full of creativity, problem-solving and hands-on engineering. Well done, Year 6!
