Wow! What a fantastic bunch of Celts we had this year acted by the relatives and friends of our year 4 children.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to support their children for this fantastic event and thanks to our head teacher who put all his energy into being our Centurion. For those who missed it, we began the afternoon in the hall learning all about the Roman armour, looking at real life examples and we learned all the battle instructions in Latin that we would need. After this, the children were let loose in the school grounds in four different centuries as part of the Roman army. The children learned different battle formations, including the tortoise and the children definitely enjoyed getting to attack one another. The armour worn by the children was the result of their hard work in school making swords and shields and also at home making helmets with help from their parents.
When we returned to the hall, children were able to compare the way the Roman army and Celtic armies fought and had some very insightful questions which showed they had really gotten into the shoes of a Roman soldier. The children particularly enjoyed seeing Mr George fire a real bow and arrow and were surprised by how big it was and how far and fast the arrow flew through the air. This has been a spectacular afternoon and we hope those who came enjoyed it.
