LS News visits the allotments

This article has been written by members of the LS News reporting team.

Today we shared an extraordinary experience of fun and laughter as we walked to the allotments in Loughton from the school and met the Parish Council clerk, Paula Mitford, accompanied by our LS News teacher, Mrs Solloway.

We first headed off to the school library where we met our LS News companions and while we waited, we chatted about the allotments. On the walk there, we saw beautiful, bewitching bushes and plump plums on a plum tree. After our ten-minute walk, we arrived at the allotments in Greenhill Close and were introduced to Kevin, Jim and Sabine.

We were separated into groups of 3 and went off with an adult to do a scavenger hunt. We had to find 12 pink kittens around the allotment site. They were on different vegetables and we searched long and hard to find them. We had to name the plant and write them down on our sheet. We learnt about different plants: artichokes, lavenders, chard, sunflowers, grapes, blueberries, cucumbers, raspberries, onions and Queen of the Night tomatoes!

There are approximately 42 plots to share out and we loved exploring and adventuring around them. Most children tasted raspberries and blueberries and we were all given a rose to bring back to school.

Mrs Mitford sent the school an email after we arrived back and said, “We were really impressed with the children — they were so polite, engaging, and an absolute credit to both themselves and the school. Their respectful attitude and enthusiasm really stood out, and it was a pleasure to spend time with them.

Thank you to the teachers who organised this fascinating experience.
