Learning about Islam and new art skills

This week sees the beginning of our Religious Education theme leading up to Christmas.

The children loved having the opportunity to discuss themes of "Believing, Behaving and Belonging" and how that relates to different religions which are represented in our school. They also worked together in groups to come up with questions to ask our visitor. Year six were pleased to welcome Mrs Sawsan Karim to school on Wednesday this week to talk to us about Islam and her life as a Muslim both growing up in the Middle East and also here in the UK.

All the children were very respectful and listened carefully as she answered a range of thought-provoking questions which the children asked her. It was lovely to see the children participating in the discussion too and sharing their knowledge with us all. All the teachers have been pleased to see how engaged the children have been and not shy about sharing their thoughts and opinions.

In art, Year 6 pupils have been drawing self-portraits with a World War Two twist! Each child chose a wartime role (nurse, pilot, soldier etc) and drew themselves wearing the appropriate uniform, including headgear. The children have been working on using correct proportions when drawing a face and using tone to highlight dark and light areas. The finished self-portraits are fantastic - please see photos of their brilliant artwork below.
