Home school reading

At the beginning of the school year, children are provided with an orange book that they personalise by decorating it with a reading theme. This acts as a journal for them to record any reading that they do at home and at school. Children should aim to read at home at least 4 times each week. Teachers, parents and other adults that read with the children are also encouraged to comment inside the book.

At Loughton School, we recognise that not all children develop the skill of reading at the same rate as their peers, We use Rapid Phonics to support those children who are still emerging readers to become more confident and secure readers. All books sent home to support our emerging readers are closely linked to the sounds they are learning.

Please continue to encourage your child with reading at home. Each term, your child will be given a copy of our termly reading challenges (these are downloadable below) to complete. For each challenge they take part in, they will earn an additional reading raffle ticket.

If you have any questions, please speak with your child’s class teacher in the first instance or see one of our reading champions.
