Advice for Parents

Do you ever feel that you are not fully in control of what your child is viewing online and who they are talking to?

The internet and related technologies, including mobile phones, blogs, podcasting and social networks are becoming increasingly important in the daily lives of our children and have many positive benefits.  They can be used both educationally and socially and are becoming part of a child’s identity.  Socially our children often use the internet for entertainment, interaction, and communication with ‘friends’.

The internet is a marvellous tool and a wonderful resource.  The challenge for parents, carers and teachers is to make sure our children are aware and understand how to be safe when using the internet and related technologies.  The often used analogy is that swimming pools can be dangerous for children and whilst fencing, lifeguards and signage can minimise the risk, the most effective measure is to teach them to swim!  Although we decrease this risk we cannot prevent it entirely.

The internet is a great place for kids to learn, play, create and connect, but technology is advancing quickly and parents may find it challenging to keep up. We want everyone to safely enjoy the web, and so wish to signpost you to some resources created by o2 to help parents regularly discuss online safety with their children. This empowers families to confidently explore the digital world: https://www.o2.co.uk/help/online-safety
