Fun Maths!

Over the past week, we have been developing our problem-solving and reasoning skills by tackling a variety of activities, including Sudoku, tessellation challenges, logic puzzles, number games, and other brain-teasers. These activities have encouraged the children to think carefully, persevere when faced with a challenge, and explain their mathematical thinking to others.

The children have especially enjoyed working together to solve puzzles, spotting patterns, and finding different ways to reach the same solution. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they have embraced new challenges and celebrated their successes.

Many of these activities can easily be enjoyed at home too! Why not have a go at completing a Sudoku puzzle together, create your own tessellation using different shapes? These fun activities are a great way to develop mathematical thinking while spending quality time together as a family.

Taking part in mental maths activities and puzzles at home can have a significant impact on your child's mathematical development. Regular practice helps to improve number fluency, strengthen memory and increase confidence when recalling key facts. Puzzles such as Sudoku and tessellations encourage children to think logically, recognise patterns, solve problems systematically and persevere when faced with a challenge. These skills are not only important in mathematics but also support learning across the wider curriculum by developing resilience, critical thinking and reasoning. Just 10–15 minutes of engaging in these activities a few times a week can help reinforce classroom learning and build confidence in a fun, enjoyable way.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, resilience and curiosity our Year 4 pupils have shown throughout these lessons. We look forward to continuing our mathematical adventures and discovering even more exciting ways to learn through play!
